Hi community, I hosted my odoo instance on AWS, and found it's pretty complicated for newbies, and a little expensive. For example, the bill was about 50 USD last monty. So I would like to consider other options with the following questions:

  • Is it possible to host Odoo on shared host service? Or it needs a VPS?

  • what's your preferred/recommended option depending on the size of a company?

Cheers,

August

I like Digital Ocean droplets very much and they are not expensive and they offers SSD based disks. Depending of your needs for the vps is the cost of course but the minimum $10 per month you can start with your deploy. Also if someone invites you, they give you $10 and $25 for who invites you. They give you the droplet(vps) in 55 seconds. I recently do some research about this for our infrastructure and https://digitalocean.com is the best option in my opinion. Here are the prices:

$ 5 /mo
$0.007 /hour

20 GB SSD Disk
1000 GB Transfer

$ 10 /mo
$0.015 /hour
1 GB / 1 CPU
30 GB SSD Disk
2 TB Transfer

$ 20 /mo
$0.030 /hour
2 GB / 2 CPUs
40 GB SSD Disk
3 TB Transfer

$ 40 /mo
$0.060 /hour
4 GB / 2 CPUs
60 GB SSD Disk
4 TB Transfer

$ 80 /mo
$0.119 /hour
8 GB / 4 CPUs
80 GB SSD Disk
5 TB Transfer

$ 160 /mo
$0.238 /hour
16 GB / 8 CPUs
160 GB SSD Disk
6 TB Transfer

$ 320 /mo
$0.476 /hour
32 GB / 12 CPUs
320 GB SSD Disk
7 TB Transfer

$ 480 /mo
$0.714 /hour
48 GB / 16 CPUs
480 GB SSD Disk
8 TB Transfer

$ 640 /mo
$0.952 /hour
64 GB / 20 CPUs
640 GB SSD Disk

Another similar option that offers more disk but more economic is https://www.atlantic.net/cloud-hosting/pricing/

Is there any update on this list of Providers? I was interested in Virtual-server.net for instance but they don't seem to be in business? Any particularly good providers to recommend for a relatively small / light installation, just to try things out at first?

I hope to contribute with my experiences

(1) - Odoo does not match Shared Hosting (End Point)

(2) - To install Odoo you do not need CPanel

(3) - RAM 2GB to use Apps Website Builder + Design + eCommerce Blogs + + + Show Forums

(4) - 1GB RAM to use CRM + Sales + Subscriptions (Up to 10 Moderate Use)

You can install Nginx to facilitate user access! As a matter of convenience, you can redirect traffic on the default HTTP port (80) to OpenERP communication port 8069, so that users no longer need to enter the port number 8069 each time you access the OpenERP system.

I hope to have Contributed.

Well, I am a newbie and I had no extraordinary problems setting up the hosting on AWS EC2 Ubuntu 14.04 LTS.

Just remember that you need 2 GB of memory if you are using the website builder. Therefore the minimum instance you need is a EC2 t2.small, which is around 19 $ a month (hourly charge without upfront payment). I can't see much of a difference in price.

Comparison (as of 22 Sep 2015):

(Linux, 2 GB RAM, traffic is neglectible when using such a small instance size)

but you know what, the bill on AWS last month is around USD 50 after the free tier. It is expensive which is why I'm looking for alternatives.

You have to compare apples with apples. If your bill is USD 50, you are obviously using a bigger instance than a t2.small. You should check your instance type in your AWS console and maybe also the AMI you are using.
