Hi,

I am new to this forum and I need to get some validation from the members here about the implementation of Odoo ERP for my company. I head the IT in my company and we are currently using Microsoft Navision as our ERP. The support for this ERP is being stopped by end of 2026 and so, we are actively evaluating the successor to Microsoft Navision. I have been championing Odoo as the replacement but there are some internal opposition to this initiative.

One of  my team members searched for some information on the internet using Co-Pilot and came up with the following inputs.

The question that was posed to Co-pilot was:

What advantages and disadvantages are shared in German forums about the ERP Odoo?

I found the answers interesting and took a closer look at the sources.

I am very concerned that the disadvantages of Odoo that are shared on the net correspond to the facts and are not just isolated cases.

Answer from CoPilot:

1. complexity of setup: initial setup and customization can be complex and time-consuming, especially for companies without IT expertise

2. costs for extensions: Although inexpensive to get started, costs can quickly increase when many modules and users are added

3. support and documentation: Some users report inadequate support and incomplete documentation, which can make implementation and use more difficult

Regarding (1), I found entries stating that configuring Odoo took a lot of time. The support from Odoo itself (not Odoo partners) is/was very poor. I think that if this is the case, the respective Odoo partner can earn a lot of money here through the consulting service.

In the same way, there were some entries on (2) that criticized that many functions had to be programmed outside of the standard and that these also drove up the costs for the introduction and operation of Odoo.

On a homepage of an Odoo partner I found costs per user. The premium version was 58,- Euro ex. VAT, here the amount is not significantly less than BC.

The comments on (3) are clear: getting support from the manufacturer is bad.

I am very skeptical about Odoo, and quite honestly not because I would be personally impacted with the new system, but because I am afraid that we are bringing something into the house that eats up a lot of money and means a lot of costs and nerves until it unfolds its benefits, if ever. I would rather look for other alternatives.

Can the members of this forum give me an objective response to the above "findings"? Since I need to carry the majority of my team members with my decision, I would like to be fair to any criticism that may come my way and address these criticisms with facts and not with "authority"

I would be most thankful for your responses

Can anyone share their success stories on how Odoo works for their organization? What has improved? What benefits are worth highlighting?

You can find discussion on Odoo implementation on Reddit (amongst other places). There are success stories and failures, but we tend to hear more about the failures because people are (understandably) upset when that happens.

In summary, I'd say that Odoo is a good simple ERP with the standard configuration, and at the other extreme if you know what you are doing it can become quite a sophisticated ERP system. However, if you don't know what you are doing you can waste a lot of time and money!

But this forum isn't really for this type of discussion, it's for specific issues with Odoo.

Hi,
Before deciding, consult with a senior Odoo consultant first. They can assess your needs, give you realistic costs and timelines, and help you understand what migration from Navision really involves.

Not all Odoo partners will guide you properly - some might oversell or underestimate complexity. Find partners with proven experience in companies like yours and transparent pricing.

Hiring a good Odoo resource for your team before starting the implementation. Having someone who knows both your business and Odoo will make everything much smoother.

Thanks
