As far as i can tell the standard shipping calculator in Odoo is only capable of doing "Shipping Rate" x "shipping weight", which is derived as a sum of product weights.
Is there any way to change this to use the native volume field?
For example, $200/m3 rate * sum of product volumes.
I believe it can be done in studio although i have had great difficulty getting it to work.

The Pricing Rules for Delivery Method accept Weight, Volume, Weight * Volume, Price and Quantity for both the CONDITION and DELIVERY COST calculations:
