Numbered headings (H1, H2, H3, etc.) are part of the HTML structure used to organize content on a web page. Each number represents the level of the heading, and the hierarchy goes as follows:

  • H1: The main heading or title of the page (used only once per page).
  • H2: Subheadings under H1, usually for major sections of the page.
  • H3: Subsections under H2, providing more detail.
  • H4-H6: Used for further breakdowns, though they are less common.

Technically, there’s no hard limit to the number of headings you can use on a page. However, for good practice:

  1. Use only one H1 per page to define the main topic.
  2. Use H2s and lower levels (H3, H4, etc.) to logically structure your content.
  3. Avoid skipping levels (e.g., going from H1 directly to H3) as it can confuse users and search engines.

While there’s no strict rule, the design often defines that:

  1. Font consistency: Headings typically use the same font family but may differ in size, weight, or style (bold, italic) to indicate hierarchy.
  2. The largest heading (H1) should stand out the most, followed by smaller and less prominent subheadings.
  3. Using consistent styles across your site improves readability and makes your design cohesive.
