I'm struggling to add some Operation instructions to a Product that consists out of many different Variants. Our product we are selling is a base component but can come in many variants/specific versions. As those variants all can be combined this can add up to 1 product with over 100 variants.

I would like to add information on how to create this product in Odoo (Documentation style). I believe the correct way is to create "Operations" that you can add in the "Work Order" tab?

However every variant has its own Bill of Material as the component differs for each Variant. But the Operations remain the same. Would this mean I would have to manually add all Operations I have created to all Variants?

Yes, your understanding is correct. In Odoo, instead of creating separate Bills of Materials (BoMs) for each variant, you can create a single BoM that includes all the necessary components and then specify which components apply to which variants. This way, you can manage the operations more efficiently.

Create a Single BoM:

Create one BoM for the product template that includes all the possible components across all variants.

Link Components to Specific Variants:

In the BoM, for each component, you can specify which variant(s) it applies to. This is done using the "BoM Variant" field. This means that only the relevant components will be used when manufacturing a specific variant.

Allocate Work Orders to One BoM:

Since the operations remain the same for all variants, you can allocate the Work Orders to this single BoM. Odoo will automatically adjust the components based on the variant being produced, but the operations will stay consistent.

Thanks for the feedback. I believe this will indeed help fix my issue I was facing.

I believe my main problem is that I have created different BoM for each Variant. Could it be that I can only create one BoM but put all components there but only link them to specific Variants?

If I only have one BoM then I only need to allocate the Work Orders to one BoM?

Yes, if you have only one Bill of Materials (BoM) that covers all the possible variants of a product, you only need to allocate the Work Orders to that single BoM. This simplifies the manufacturing process since you won’t need to create and manage multiple BoMs for each variant.
