We will migrate at some point next year to Odoo. Our configuration is quite close to the standard installation and we don't have a lot of customizations.

However, there are a few things available in Odoo 17, which we would like to use.

Is it possible to install a preview version of Odoo 17, based on the master branch of the GitHub repo with regular upgrades of this branch, and upgrade to the final release in November, or is this not recommended? We would like to start with Odoo 17 and avoid a DB migration very soon after the go-live, but the earlier we can start testing, the better.

We know that this would be bleeding edge, but it would help us testing. We can deal with unfinished bits and peaces and nightly builds as long as we can save us a DB migration early next year =)

Hi Michael,

As you know the master branch contains the latest version, but it is intended mainly for developers and testers to contribute as it may contain unfinished features or bugs.

So using this for a production env will be risky. I would recommend you to wait for the official release.

In the meantime, as you know, you can use the runbot and get more familiarized.

Thanks

Many thanks, the runbot definitely helps.
Is it already known, when the upgrade / migration service for existing databases for on-prem installations will be available? Is this available at the same time as the release, or a few months later? If I remember correctly, at least for cloud installations, it takes a few months after the release before the migration tool is available.

Yes, As you said for the on-premise it will be available at the same time of release, likely in September 2023. Where as for the cloud users it usually takes a few months from the main release.
Thanks

you can test/preview the master version from runbot https://runbot.odoo.com/runbot which will eventually become V17
